Welcome to Interpreting Issues

Hello and welcome to my blog. I am hoping it will be the start of a forum where interpreter's issues, particularly in Scotland are debated with a view to raising public awareness of the professional work accomplished by professional interpreters and raisng the status of interpreters in the public eye and even of the service users.

  1. A fascinating and depressing survey of legal interpreting in Scotland.
Have you come across the reports of miscarriages of justice in England which were caused by faulty interpreting? http://www.interpreters-branch.org.uk, Malpractices Dossier. Is there anyway you can move the column of text to the right so the film material boxes don't overlap? Best, Ruth Morris (morrir@gmail.com)

  2. Many Thanks Ruth for your comments. It's a privillege to have your support. It's little consolation that the same issues are also experineced in England. Regarding viewing the You Tube video,I suggest for viewers to click on the full screen icon,(on the right of sound icon) if the overlap text/video viewing is an issue, as I have no control of the lay out of the text. 3. Where all those interpreters who felt strongly about these issues then? Where are your contributions to resolve these issues? Is everything ok then and all the issues are resolved? I don't think so. I have jut returned from the IAA waiting room and the same music was playing. It just hits me. The general apathy amongst most of the silent majority is I think because they have not passed Maslow's basic and safety needs. All these interpreting issues are not really the main and real problems to resolve. Are there any who reached the level of needing to belong to a group, who wish to lead and be recognised and respected. I wait to hear from you.

  5. Ben, A comprehensive paper on the state of the Interpreting scene in Scotland. Well done. Part of the reason for interpreter apathy is indeed grounded in Maslow's Basic Needs but much of it has to do with the atitude that we 'Just need to do enough to get by' which is rife from the top to the bottom of the chain. I fear that recent developments in Scotland will make it even more difficult for professionals to make a decent living at this game. ashwani.sabharwal@ntlworld.com
